Sustainable Packaging Project with Gerber Childrenswear, LLC
Fall 2024
This semester, FTBEC is partnering with Gerber Childrenswear, LLC (Gerber) on a sustainable packaging initiative. In response to new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, Gerber is actively seeking solutions to reduce packaging waste, such as hangtags, poly bags, and hangers. A team of four NC State graduate students is collaborating with Gerber, evaluating packaging for top-performing items and brainstorming ways to minimize or replace components with sustainable alternatives.
The team presents ideas to Gerber in weekly meetings, refining their approach based on feedback. They are also analyzing sustainable packaging trends in the apparel industry while considering ways to maximize Gerber’s branding on the packaging. They further ensure that the proposed solutions are time- and cost-efficient for production and assembly.
This project has provided the student team with an opportunity to apply their critical and analytical skills to solve real-world challenges. The students are excited about the prospect of seeing their packaging solutions implemented and displayed in major retailers like Walmart and Target.
FTBEC values projects like this, where students engage directly with the industry, applying their knowledge to practical scenarios, and preparing for future careers. Companies interested in similar collaborations are encouraged to contact Dr. Ellie Jin, Executive Director, at bejin@ncsu.edu.
